A brief history of Gates Chili High School

Gates Chili High School was established as part of a major district expansion following the centralization of four local school districts in 1956. At that time, the newly formed Gates Chili Central School District did not have its own high school; instead, students in grades 9–12 attended schools in neighboring districts through contract agreements.

Recognizing the need for a dedicated secondary facility, voters approved the purchase of an 86-acre site on Wegman Road in 1956. Construction began shortly after, and in September 1958, Gates Chili High School opened its doors to students in grades 7–10. Additional grades were added in the following years, with the school celebrating its first graduating class in 1961.

As enrollment surged throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the high school underwent expansions and shared space with the newly built middle school to accommodate growing student numbers. Today, Gates Chili High School serves students in grades 9–12 and continues its tradition of academic excellence, innovation and community pride.
